Wish your eye makeup would look as good at the end of the night as it did at the beginning of the night? New Double Wear Stay-In-Place Shadow Creme and Stay-In-Place Eye Pencil both promise perfectly put eye makeup – all day or all night. In The Makeup has tested them, and the performance is even better than the promise.

Double Wear Stay-In-Place Shadow Creme delivers 15 hours of perfect wear. Apply with fingers or a cream eye shadow brush. The pencils glide on like silk, takes about 30 seconds to set, and gives more than 12 hours of perfect wear. If you try to smudge it before letting it set, it won’t be budge-proof.

Rouge G de Guerlain ($45) will make lipstick your most chic accessory. To design this lipstick, Place Vendôme jewelry designer Lorenz Bäumer drew inspiration from a bar of gold, but placed the lipstick horizontally and added feminine curves. Carrying through the vision for elegance, the jeweler created a magnetic mechanism to reproduce the air-releasing effect of an antique powder case. Click, and the white-gold coated case reveals a mirror and a lipstick nestled within. Rouge G unites the qualities of a powder case, a jewel and a precious lipstick. Available in 25 shades at fine department stores.

We’ll just say it…. We lust for this.

An Eyeliner Stain

In Beauty Spy on February 18, 2009 at 3:15 pm

sormeh-powder.jpg

In The Makeup loves a good lip stain – the kind that has you waking up in the morning with tinted lips from the night before. So we are….nothing less than smug about discovering an eyeliner stain.

Sormeh eye lining powder, made by makeup artist Mosha Katani, stays on the skin even after being washed.  Melissa Magsaysay, writer for the latimesblog, says “I lined my eyes last Thursday and even after washing and scrubbing my face, there was still a black line around my eyes for almost 3 days.  It was smudgy, but just required a touch-up in the morning, so I didn’t walk out of the house looking like Courtney Love after a really bad night.”

So…a little stain on the lip, a little stain around the eye….and you wake up looking like a total Goddess!

The powder, which is made from castor oil and zinc oxide, is $48 and is sold here. Colors are black, midnight, nude, purple smoke, and rustic brown. And the ruby bottle of powder comes with an eyeliner brush too.

ProCurl Lash Curler

For those who lament that their lash curler comes with only one replacement pad, Tweezerman might have you gloating with its launch of ProCurl Lash Curler – a brand new lash curler that comes with three replacement pads. We haven’t tried the curler yet, but we’ve read a few positive reviews on it. And, call us old ladies, but we like its rose gold color.

The company describes it as “Ergonomically designed with pinch-proof precision, the narrower top bar is curved to fit most eye-shapes. The doubled-body design and contoured finger loops provide ultimate strength for comfortable, easy curling. The thick, rounded silicone pad won’t stick and ensures always-intense curl without ever creasing lashes.”

For anyone who is ready to commit sacrilege (i.e. owning anything other than a Shu), tweezerman’s new curler is available at Sephora (only) and will sell for $20.

Hoodia In Your Lip Gloss

The Skinny Hips half of the product is attributed to the presence of the Hoodia Gordonii extract, a plant native to Southern Africa and found in a number of diet and weight loss supplements due to its appetite suppressing activity.

And it is the vitamin B3 in the formulation which reportedly helps stimulate blood flow to the lips making them appear fuller.

Purple Lab’s Huge Lips, Skinny Hips will debut in Spring 2009 for $20.00 at Scoop and Space.N.K.  But before you buy, Cosmetic Scientist Colin says:

“If you are dieting or overweight do not think that this product will do anything for you apart from maybe leaving you less money to spend on food.”

Lash Liner

novalash-lash-liner

You want super-sexy, beautiful kitten eyes? So do we, and we’ve just discovered NovaLash’s new LashLiner.

Why is it different? Its not an eyeliner, but a micro-slim pencil designed to reach inside the lash line. An eyeliner can be used on top of it if desired. The LashLiner deposits tiny dots of rich, black color in between each eyelash hair for a thicker, darker lash line.

LashLiner is designed to reach where eyeliner can not. The micro-fine pencil can be sharpened to a super sharp point, and goes on creamy and rich and dark. Use the tiny point to apply little dots of black in between the eyelash hairs. This results in super sexy, bright, beautiful kitten eyes.

In The Makeup also thinks it would be great as an eyeliner for beauties with small eyelids who want a super thin eyeliner.

We haven’t found a national retailer that sells the Lash Liner, but you can go to the NovaLash website and click on their “Find Us” button to find salons and spas that sell Lash Liner.

Let us know what you think of this product!

Booty Butter Tanning Lotion

In Bath & Body, Beauty Spy on January 27, 2009 at 1:38 am

bikini-kitchen

In The Makeup Says: If we were going to tan (we forever never ever tan), we think we would be slathering bottles of this yummy sounding tanning lotion all over ourselves.

Bikini Kitchen Says: It includes antioxidant vitamins A, E & C which when applied topically create a healthy combination. Vitamin A helps to form new blood vessels which give the skin an attractive rosy glow. Vitamin C fends against damage caused by the sun, while Vitamin E protects the epidermis from early stages of ultraviolet light damage and reduces the severity of sunburn. “With Booty Butter your whole body will shimmer an awesome brown in about an hour,” said Karrie Pettit, founder of Bikini Kitchen. “If your skin is extra-sensitive to UV rays, you can use Booty Butter with any other type of sunscreen and still see great results quickly.”

Booty Butter contains no chemicals or artificial dyes, somehow works as a bug repellant (maybe we could use it for that since we don’t tan) and is also water-resistant.It also contains caffeine, which is good for making your skin look a bit firmer.

Booty Butter’s scent is mocha laced with an aroma of delectable sugar cookies.

This adorable bottle is $29.95 for an 8 ounce bottle, and can be purchased at www.BikiniKitchen.com – where you can also read more details about this quirky (though enticing) lotion.

Ink Guard

In Beauty Spy on January 21, 2009 at 5:48 pm

kat-von-d

Inkguard is a new skin care treatment aimed at the ever-growing number of people with tattoos who want to safeguard the appearance of their cherished body art.

The product was launched in New York this week and targets the eternal problem of fading tattoo ink – a phenomenon that causes tattoos to blur and color to disappear.

This is because when a tattoo is made, ink pigments are trapped in skin cells to create the desired image. Subsequent exposure to ultraviolet light, environmental toxins and pollutants create free radicals which damage the the skin at the cellular level and degrade the tattoo ink.

In response, many tattoo addicts revert to having their body art ‘refreshed’ every few years, but for the many who have a real aversion to the needle, the skin care lotion offers a more convenient and less uncomfortable solution.

Tattoo Inkguard contains UV screens and moisturisers that create a skin barrier to prevent the free radical damage, which the company claims results in brighter and more vibrant tattoos.

The treatment includes two products, the Tattoo Defender SPF 30+ and the Tattoo Enhancer Topical Antioxidant Treatment, which will each retail for approximately $25.

“Until now, there has been virtually no focus on products that protect the appearance of tattoos and enhance their vibrancy,” said Matthew Nicolo, president of Inkguard.

“Tattoos are an investment and Tattoo Inkguard was designed to help you protect your skin and your investment for the long term,” said Nicolo.

The maker is expected to market the range in tattoo parlours and personal care providers throughout North America, with the possibility of launching internationally at a later date.

Ted & Target

$200.00 for a Hair Serum from Target? Ted Gibson says YES.

New York-based celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson charges $950 for a haircut and recently styled Debra Messing’s hair for the Golden Globe Awards.

The Heart of His Hair Care: His exclusive wild orchid extract (plus some other luxurious ingredients) to work on:

  • toning and conditioning an unbalanced scalp
  • preventing moisture loss
  • increasing flexibility
  • enhancing shine
  • protecting hair from environmental damage
  • relieving stress with aromatherapy

“My customer is black, white and Asian. She is 25 to 55 years old. She travels. She shops. She lives in cities [all over the country]. This will give her the opportunity to buy [Ted Gibson] where she goes and shops all the time,” he said.

Gibson acknowledged that the Target deal may hamper his current distribution partnership with his current retailers like Henri Bendel, Saks Fifth Avenue and Sephora. “[The specialty stores] have been great. They have put me on the map. They believed in my two [initial] products three years ago. I am grateful for the relationships. But to grow, I went to Target. I want to be a household name and only to be in one channel of distribution, that couldn’t be realized.”

Gibson’s product range includes a variety of shampoo+conditioner and styling products that are formulated with his Merlot Complex for shine and movement.

In May, Target doors will feature a photo and bio of the hairstylist along with his items.

In The Makeup Says: We do love Ted Gibson’s ingredients, packaging, scent, and performance. But we swear on our makeup kits that Moroccan Oil (under $30) is as good to your hair as Ted’s $200 hair repair serum.

Gabbana also says that the lipsticks will be scented with rose because they “wanted to create makeup with a scent.”

“Domenico and I remember when we were children and opened our mother’s handbags— the scent of her lipstick trailed out. I observed that when women open makeup, they smell it first.”

Prices will range from $20 for nail lacquer to $59 for powder foundation.

This April, seven Aveeno Shampoos + Conditioners will hit the shelves.

The Heart of the Line:

The Nourishing Wheat Complex lies at the heart of the hair care line, which is actually a blend of wheat germ oil and wheat protein to help replenish moisture by targeting the weakest part of the follicle and depositing the right amount of proteins. Aveeno’s complex, it should be noted, uses nonhydrolyzed protein, which means that it is not soluble in water and won’t break down when washing.

The Line Includes:

Nourish+Moisturize shampoo and conditioner for dry and damaged hair. Clinical results after three washes with these items showed that 92 percent of women’s hair looked healthier and showed improvement in manageability; 92 percent of women felt their hair was more moisturized and 85 percent showed improvement in softness.

Nourish+Revitalize shampoo and conditioner is designed to help protect hair’s moisture balance and repair everyday damage, and is gentle enough for color-treated hair. Clinical results showed that these items helped 92 percent of women’s hair improve in softness; 88 percent of women’s hair showed an improvement in moisturization and 83 percent of women’s hair looked healthier.

Nourish+Volumize
shampoo and conditioner, designed to boost volume, uses blue lotus flower. Clinical results showed that after three washes, 92 percent of women’s hair improved in smoothness; 88 percent of women’s hair improved in elasticity and nearly 80 percent of women thought their hair felt more repaired and looked shinier.

Nourish+Soothe shampoo, which uses lavender and peppermint, addresses those with sensitive scalps.

Nourish+Condition Leave-In Treatment is a leave-in conditioner that aims to add moisture.

Products will sell for $6.49

Genifique

In Beauty Spy, Saving Face on January 14, 2009 at 2:24 pm

genifique01

Lancome’s latest product launch, Genifique Youth Activating Concentrate, is based on more than 10 years of research and has already secured seven patents.

Lancôme executives say the product, which is self-adjusting, is suitable for users “ages seven to 77” and “It works on all skin types, all ages.”

Génifique is intended to deliver significantly improved tone, texture, luminosity and elasticity inside of four weeks by boosting exactly the proteins the user needs at any given age. According to Lancôme, that is because the three key genes and two key proteins Génifique targets take in only as much of the gene-boosting concentrate as they need. In a nutshell, the formula — driven by two main molecules — is designed to enhance the environment of skin cell genes, which in turn sends an RNA messenger to nurture protein growth in the top stratum corneum layer.

Génifique, which will retail for $78 for a 1-oz. bottle, is also intended to be used in tandem with a serum, moisturizer and/or an exfoliator. The product will launch in all global markets except Asia in April; Asia will get Génifique in September.

In The Makeup Says: Active ingredients include Bio-Lysat, Phystosphingosine-SLC, and Hepes. They go into skin and act as an “alarm clock” – telling skin to produce more of its “youth proteins.” More youth proteins should result in a more youthful quality to the skin. Youthful skin is a drop away? C’est Magnifique!

A New Lipstick Pigment

In Beauty Spy on January 8, 2009 at 3:12 am

shiseido-lipstickA new lipstick pigment combines vivid shine whilst helping to diminish the appearance of lip lines and wrinkles, says Shiseido.

In the past manufacturers have used a plate-like shape pigment if they want to achieve maximum shine, explains Shiseido, due to the way the particle reflects light. However, such a pigment can emphasize an uneven surface, making lines and wrinkles even more noticeable.

In contrast, spherical pigments are often used to disguise fine lines and wrinkles in products such as foundations, but the oil content of a lipstick can make these hard to use.

In response to this problem, Shiseido has created a spherical pearlizing agent with a two-layer structure consisting of a spherical powder of uniform particle size at the core, surrounded by a layer of pearlizing particles to allow the pigment to both disguise the wrinkles and create a vivid shine.

The new spherical pearl luster pigment will be incorporated into the company’s future lipstick products.

In The Makeup Says: We do wish we knew for sure when these lipsticks are coming out. We’ve heard a February 2009 rumor, but aren’t sure enough to say for sure. But there are more details about the science of this lipstick in Shiseido’s very own press release.
And if anyone knows when this commodity will hit the shelves, please tell us!

December 29, 2008 – London Luxury LLC announced its SkinGlow bedding collection is exclusively available at select Bed Bath & Beyond® stores and nationwide on bedbathandbeyond.com.

London Luxury’s SkinGlow bedding collection is infused with copper technology that is dermatologist tested and clinically proven to smooth and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, crow’s feet and other skin imperfections in just four weeks of use.

The SkinGlow line utilizes patented Cupron copper technology. Copper ions woven into the fabric are activated by moisture released from the body during sleep, beautifying skin’s appearance, making it look smoother and younger while nourishing stressed and aging skin. The ions last for the lifetime of the product, even after repeated washings, without losing effectiveness, as long as fabric softeners aren’t used. In addition to its beauty benefits, the non-sensitizing and non-irritating copper-infused fabric has natural deodorant properties that reduce body odor-causing bacteria, fungus and microbes. The pillows, pillow covers and comforters range in price from $19.99 to $249.99.

In The Makeup Says: In our quest to avoid long-term pillow wrinkles, we have tried sleeping on silk (always feels like we’re slipping off the pillow), sleeping only on our backs (we never wake up that way), caging ourselves in with body pillows so we can’t roll over in our sleep (we still roll over), and sleeping with frownies stuck to our faces (not pretty). So we read the Study to Determine the Efficacy in Improving Attributes of Facial Skin when Using Cupron (Copper-Oxide Containing) Pillowcases and SkinGlow might be the one.

You can have fresh fruits and veggies delivered to your door. Why not fresh skin care too?

“It has been scientifically shown that over time the optimum efficacy of the active ingredients in any skin care product drops significantly. Therefore, it is highly recommended to apply skin care products as soon as they are manufactured to guarantee maximum efficacy,” says Dr. Chung CEO of Dermaheal USA Corp. “That is why Dermaheal has come up with the revolutionary concept to deliver its product to customers by mail immediately after it is manufactured.”

If products are manufactured on a Monday, Dermaheal can ship them to customers by Wednesday or Thursday for receipt by the end of the same week.

In addition to peptides and nano-capsulation technology, Dermaheal contains about 70 percent plant extracts (such as ginkgo biloba leaf, camellia sinesis leaf and liquorice root extract), fermented organic ingredients, to address skin problems like wrinkles, sagging, dryness, spots and signs of fatigue. It also helps balance the skin’s pH level, elasticity and radiance.

Using the pharmaceutical-grade delivery system of nanotechnology, the active peptides are embedded within tiny capsules called nanosomes. Nanosomes have the incredible ability to pass through the dead layers of the skin and actually reach the deep layers where living skin cells reside.

Dermaheal 2 Weeks Miracle is available in two product lines – Redesign (anti-aging and anti-wrinkle) and Rise N Shine (skin brightening and anti-pigmentation). Each product comes in a set of four items: a moisturizing solution or toner, a correcting serum, a moisturizing cream and an eye cream. Each package lasts for two weeks,

Dermaheal has been used throughout Southeast Asia, Europe, and Middle East since 2002 and is available directly from Dermaheal’s Web site, www.2weeksmiracleusa.com.

In The Makeup Says: In the quest for the freshest skin care, we’ve whipped up our fair share of honey masks, yogurt cleansers, and sugar scrubs. Could we really have skin care as fresh as our food without putting the groceries on our faces? We’re intrigued, but we’re holding out for reviews. Dear Readers, please post comments if you’ve tried the two weeks miracle….

Sleeping Beauty

Next month, Dr. Murad will introduce Sleep Reform Serum and Supplements. The products will use a Repair Enhancing Matrix developed to increase the depth and duration of restorative sleep which, according to Dr. Murad, is the best anti-aging cure out there.

“By increasing the body and skin’s ability to sleep better, we can improve collagen proliferation and synthesis and reverse the course of aging,” Dr. Murad says.

sleep-reform1

Sleep Reform Serum ($97 for 1 oz.) is intended to smooth and plump for more youthful skin while Sleep Reform Supplements ($49.50 for 60 tablets) are intended to help reduce nighttime disturbances, hydrate, and protect skin from free radical damage incurred during the day.

In The Makeup Says: Beauty sleep is just as important as lipgloss and mascara. But your face  isn’t the only part of you that needs beauty sleep. Your figure does too. According to WebMD, when you don’t get enough sleep, ghrelin levels rise; and ghrelin stimulates appetite, so you’ll be hungrier. Plus, being sleepy makes physical activity less likely. Studies recommend 7-9 hours a night; In The Makeup says there is no shame in 10-12.

Ultra Correction Line Repair

This January, Chanel will release a new weapon in anti-aging – Ultra Correction Line Repair, a five-unit treatment line whose sophisticated soft textures will surely seduce even the most youthful beauty mavens.

One of the most relevant and well-known causes of wrinkles is the slow down of cell renewal and the thinning of the skin. Ultra Correction Line Repair, however, will address a hitherto under-exposed cause, the hardening of the collagen in the skin. Containing an entirely new material, Cedar Bay FPA, it will work to increase flexibility in collagen tissue so that resilience is restored, recovering skin volume and fullness. As we are accustomed, the scent of this Chanel product is soft and subtle. Prices will range from $77 to $135, and model Shalom Harlow, one of our favorites, will star in the campaign.

In The Makeup Says: We always welcome new technology in the fight against wrinkles. We will certainly be waiting to say “Shalom” to this new arsenal.

First FDA Approved Eyelash Enhancer

In Beauty Spy, Cheat Sheet on December 8, 2008 at 12:18 am

latisse

Let us have a moment of SILENCE:  Athena’s Revitalash and Jan Marini’s Masses of Lashes launched several years ago, only to be taken off the market and reformulated because of FDA regulatory issues and allegations of patent infringement over the active ingredient bimatoprost (sold as Lumigan by pharmaceutical company Allergan).

And now for a moment of SCIENCE:  Lumigan is a drug that was developed to treat glaucoma. A most interesting side-effect is that its ingredient, bimatoprost, gave users longer, thicker, darker lashes in a matter of days.

Now Allergan is on the brink of FDA approval to market its own Lumigan-based eyelash growth stimulator, but it will be by prescription only.

According to an Allergan news release, the product is expected to launch in 2009 and will be marketed under the brand name Lattise.

In The Makeup Says: Our first reaction was despair. Doctors appointments, check-ups, co-pays, insurance companies? Our visions of Bambi-like lashes turned into visions of Bambi in a brush-fire. But Lumigan’s prescribing information notes that the drug may darken eyelid skin and gradually increase pigmentation of the iris, making even blue eyes browner. Latisse isn’t meant to go directly in or on the eyes, and each Latisse dose uses only 5% of a Lumigan drop. But we all know that whatever you’re wearing on your lashes inevitably goes other places. Whether it be a fully-mascaraed lash that somehow gets stuck in your eye, or flakes of mascara on your face that no one tells you about. So the guidance of a kind and cordial physician may not be so bad after all.

  • an eye base in an array of vibrant shades

So, intelligent beauties, shop for beauty irrepressibly; but save for the possibility of new commodities.

Exclusive London Launch

In Beauty Spy on November 5, 2008 at 4:44 am

illamasquacollection

Designed to be colour-intense, colour-true and long lasting, Illamasqua offers an unprecedented range.

Illamasqua will launch with four collections. Noir: a dark edgy seductive collection for the Femme Fatale. Fantasy: a surreal, colourful collection that takes you out of the ordinary. Romance: a feminine collection for the true romantic in you. 1920s Berlin: inspired by the dark and illicit clubs of Berlin in the 1920s

Illamasqua will provide make-up lessons rather than ‘make overs’, and make-up artists will spend time getting to know individuals, helping them explore and create the look they want to achieve.

Illamasqua launched 4 days ago, exclusively in London at Selfridges on Oxford Street – home of the largest Beauty Hall in Europe.

In The Makeup Says: Flawless false lashes, the 50s flick, defined brows, smoky eyes, sculpted cheeks, a perfect pout, and a cupid bow. We would hold our breath for it, but mums the word on a US debut.

Limitless Lashes

In Beauty Spy on October 29, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Mirabella is launching a new lash collection, which will be available in select salons this February. The collection will include lash primer, lash therapy, and a mascara that Mirabella says will create super-thick dramatic lashes without smudging, smearing, or clumping in a light-weight, quick drying formula that takes advantage of microbead technology to optimize thickening and length. Mirabella also says that it will remove easily with eye makeup remover or gentle cleanser. Plus, the company will be offering a limited edition heated eyelash curler.

In The Makeup Says: We can’t review it, because it doesn’t exist yet. But, we do have an insider tip-off. Allure magazine will be offering a free collection to the first 500 entries. Look for the offer in January!

Olay Professional Pro-X

In Beauty Spy, Saving Face on October 28, 2008 at 3:49 am

Olay’s newest range, Olay Professional-Pro-X, is scheduled to hit select mass market outlets at the end of December, with national roll-out planned for January. Packaged in clinical-looking, bright red- and-white boxes, Olay Professional looks to be the high-end consumers’ skin care solution accessible in a drugstore.

Olay Professional consists of six items, each priced at around $42. Three of the six are termed the “hard hitters,” which are the primary skin care solutions in the line; they are the Age Repair Lotion with SPF 30, Hydra Firming Cream and Wrinkle Smoothing Cream. The other three items are meant to target acute anti-aging needs and include Deep Wrinkle Treatment, Discoloration Fighting Concentrate and Eye Restoration Complex.

A Starter Protocol will sell for $62 and include half sizes of the Age Repair Lotion SPF 30, the Wrinkle Smoothing Cream and the Eye Restoration Complex. Except for the discoloring concentrate, all of the items utilize a new proprietary peptide, Pal-KT — a newer proposition than what is found in Olay Regenerist. According to Dr. Rosemarie Osborne, a principal scientist at P&G Beauty, Pal-KT increases not just hydration but builds collagen and elastin. The firming cream includes hexamidine, which is said to increase lipids in the surface barrier of the skin.

In The Makeup Says: It may seem far-fetched to shop for $42 youth-elixirs at the drugstore. After all, isn’t CVS where we go when we’ve just spent the family fortune on a new pair of Christian Loubutons and then find out that we are completely out of La Mer? Not anymore. Today, the line in the sand is being re-drawn. The infamous Nadine Habosh (aka Jolie) declares that “when you buy a $75 moisturizer, more than half of what you’re paying for is prestige.” We’re not suggesting that anyone become a drugstore-beauty captive. We’re promoting savviness. Unless you’re blessed with more money that God, savvy shopping is a beauty commandment. Who wants to live on egg noodles in their retirement? In The Makeup would much rather walk a smart line between department and drugstore. And if Olay’s scientists, who did, after all, bring us the Regenerist line, can compete with La Mer scientists, then Olay Pro X will not only earn the right to sit on our vanities, but will earn our reverence as well.

24 Karat Gold Dust Powder

In Beauty Spy on October 19, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Jane Iredale Says: This feathery soft loose powder truly meets the gold standard—it contains flecks of real 24-K gold that twinkle on skin, leaving behind a gorgeous candlelit glow. The rose hue, the latest addition to the Fall color collection, adds to the romance, beckoning a heat-of-the-moment flush that flatters every skin tone. We love the versatility of this product: mix with moisturizer and smooth on your décolleté, shoulders and legs to create a subtle body shimmer, add to hair styling aids to impart shine, swipe on lids to make eye color pop or apply on the apples of cheeks for a warm bronzed finish.

In The Makeup Says: Cleopatra slept in a gold mask every night for youthful skin, the Queen of the Ching Dynasty had gold rolled on her face everyday, and luxury spas around the world have been offering pure gold facials since Japan introduced them in May 2007. Gold-based facials started at 20,000 yen ($170) and are now available in the United States starting at $175.

While we respect gold facials, any reasonable girl should have a pot of Jane’s $12 gold powder. Facials, after all, are not makeup. Plus, you can mix it into your creams and lotions in between gold facials. We’re just sorry Jane hasnt mentioned how to take a hot bath with this stuff!

Project Beauty

In Beauty Spy, Cheat Sheet on October 13, 2008 at 6:02 am

On-screen makeover

‘Project Beauty’ is a game designed for the Nintendo DS with the help of  Shiseido

A scanning device transfers digital images of your face onto one of the two screens.

Facial features such as your eyes and lips are analysed, and colors and products are suggested. Then, an image replete with suggested makeover ideas is displayed on the console’s second screen.

Project Beauty can suggest makeup for different occasions from the office to a hot party. You can also create your own makeovers choosing shades from the software’s virtual palette.

You’ll be able to test out looks and colors without having to physically apply (or buy!) any of the products.

Project Beauty is scheduled for release on November 27th in Japan for 6,090 yen ($55.00)

In The Makeup Says: Sounds like an activity worth trying. Certainly if you are bored it would be much better to play this game than to….um…..lets say eat or call your ex boyfriend. We also think it makes perfect sense for girls with gamer boyfriends to suggest this as a game you might be into. But, lets be realistic. How could software tell you if you’ll like the way a product smells (and this is important as even mascaras are scented these days), if it will spread nicely on your priceless skin, or how well it will last. We’ll put it on our shopping list but we think makeupalley, regular browsing at Sephora, and glossy magazines still reign.

The Noir Lip

In Beauty Spy on October 10, 2008 at 7:06 am

While Hollywood is still all about retro reds, lips are getting yet another seductive update this fall – Black, or near black, lips. Since no one could argue that this is easy to pull off in real life, check out Lancôme’s low-pigment black lip glaze slated for release in November. While it looks black in the tube, it goes on sheer. It can also be layered over other lip colors for a black berry effect. Only 500 will be available, and only at Bloomingdale’s on 59th St.

Rumor has it the waitlist is already filling up fast! (If you want it, call 212-705-2886 to reserve yours for $48).

The limited-edition gloss debuts as part of a luxe lip set also including Color Fever Lipstick in Piha Red, which is also derived from high fashion – it’s meant to be the same color as a Louboutin sole.

Matching your bag and shoes? Old news. Matching your lip color to the sole of your shoes is more like it.

IN THE MAKEUP THINKS: The neighbors may not understand, but Vogue magazine does. Along with most of London, Paris, and Milan. Dear friends, get the sheer noir lip on your personal gift registries as fast as you can.

Maybelline Lash Stiletto

In Beauty Spy on October 7, 2008 at 3:54 am

How about a mascara that does for your lashes what stilettos do for your legs? Rumor has it that Maybelline will be launching stilettos for your lashes in January with Lash Stiletto mascara.
This mascara will be all about length, length, length. It will combine length polymers to stretch the lash, Pro-Vitamin B5 to give a black patent shine, and a crisscross brush designed to grip and extend lashes to allow each to get coated.
“It is not a heavy look, but a sleek, long look,” said Serena Giovi, vice president of marketing, Maybelline New York.

Lash Stiletto will sell for $8.95 and will be available in three shades: Very Black, Soft Black and Brownish Black.
